Pennsic XLV (2016) Archery Results

Beasties and Grotesques!

This year's War saw a return to the traditional East and allies vs Midrealm and allies. The East took all 5 archery war points – 3 for the populace shoots and 2 for the Champions Team competition.

Populace War Points
(3 war points, shot over 5 days, August 7 thru 12, 2016)
Archers could shoot each of the 3 shoots up to 5 times this war. Shooting days were Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Due to a high heat index, the range was shut down for several hours on Thursday.
- Clout with Giraffe: Shots landing inside the square castle turret were worth 3 points; shots hitting the giraffe were worth 4 points; there was a "moat" at approximately 50 yards worth 1 point, with a moat monster in it worth 2 points; 6 shots, untimed.
- Castle Window: At approximately 30 yards and timed (30 seconds); archers scored 1 point for each shot in the black slot of the window, 2 points if the shot hit the grotesque face framed in red at the bottom of the slot.
- Soldiers: 6 shots, untimed; the targets were garudas – bird-headed men holding snakes – at approximately 15, 35, 45 and 55 yards, worth 1, 2, 3 and 4 points, respectively; archers could shoot at any target they wished with their 6 shots.

Archery Champions Team Tournement
(2 war points, shot Wednesday, August 10, 2016)
Queen Avelina addressed the Champions and gave a token to each to remember the day. Her Majesty participated in the shooting, as did King Kenric, who joined in a short time later.
Each side was allowed to select 30 champions team members and 10 alternates, for a total of 40. The winner of the two war points was the side which won 2 of the 3 shoots, and the winner of each shoot was determined by total points.
- The Roving Range consisted of 10 stations, laid out on the main archery ranges, all featuring very challenging targets. A pendulum with a butterfly target had to be hit while it was moving; birds in a tree proved problematic for many archers; matching hits on creatures in two tapestry panels called for team strategy; a friend/foe shoot was presented as a fox carrying off a goose; medieval floor tile images, a goat playing a flute, bats and sea monsters were all to be found.
- Friend/Foe: this traditional timed shoot at about 30 yards called for archers to hit the the evil serpent for +1 point without hitting the besieged warrior for -1 point.
- Long Distance: all team members took 3 shots each from 4 different unknown distances estimated to be between 130 and 45 yards; hits on the two monsters in front of the clout scored 1 point; hits on the skinny dragonfly inside the clout scored 2 points; there was no scoring drop-zone and no background scoring areas.
